AND TO DEVELOP THE SAMMY L. YOUNGE, JR LEGACY & LEARNING CENTER
Sammy L. Younge, Jr. Legacy & Learning Center grew out of an intergenerational group of community members dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of a local hero with national impact. Sammy L. Younge, Jr. was a young Navy veteran, a student at Tuskegee Institute (University), and a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) who took a simple stand for dignity.
Sammy L. Younge, Jr. believed that access to something as basic as a public restroom should not be determined by the color of your skin. For that belief, he gave his life.
He was only 21 years old.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
We are raising funds to complete the purchase of the home where Sammy grew up in historic Greenwood, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. The home will become a transformative space that will honor Sammy’s legacy. The most urgent need is to complete the acquisition of the house where Sammy grew up. It will be purchased and renovated to become the Legacy and Learning Center.
We need to raise an additional $55,000 by April 1, 2026.
The Sammy L. Younge Jr. Legacy & Learning Center is designed to become a dynamic hub by preserving history, cultivating youth leadership, and creating a safe space for intergenerational education, community & placed-based learning, while utilizing STEAM as a tool to investigate the civil rights movement and its unfinished work in Tuskegee, AL.
We want to honor his legacy not just with memory, but with movement.
